NGC 253 is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor. The galaxy is a starburst galaxy, which means that it's currently undergoing a period of intense star formation. NGC 253 was discovered by C. Herschel in 1783 and is about 12 million light years away from earth.
